SNEW Terminology

MEDIA MAKE CHANGE defines the following terms in the context of media existing or intended to exist on Internet platforms and can be used to create knowledge, enhance networks, and build community both online and offline.

While we do not claim authority over these terms, we also do not use the terms social and new media interchangeably since we believe that each are separate ideas, but can function dependently.

SOCIAL MEDIA is interactive media generated by users and solely depends on user participation and contribution.

NEW MEDIA includes digital technology tools and methods like audio, video, and text publication that when accessed can be produced and instantly published on social networking sites, blog sites, podcasts, and video hosting sites, otherwise known as social media platforms.

Simply put, DIGITAL MEDIA is any form of media that does not require analog technology or a printing press to function. Digital media can be used as an umbrella term to generally refer to social media and new media technologies.

SNEW MEDIA is a new term coined by MEDIA MAKE CHANGE founder Tara L. Conley to refer to both social media and new media simultaneously while acknowledging their separate methods and purposes in the digital age.

Our Vision: To help support and build coalitions of Media Justice Advocates, that is, future social leaders, informants, activists, and entrepreneurs committed to making a positive impact around the world and using digital media technology as innovative and creative tools for civic engagement and community building.
